I don't know.  To my knowledge, this has never been done.  That said,
GridShib relies on X.509-bound SAML tokens, so in principle any
implementation of WS-Security X.509 Token Profile should be adequate.

Can you point me to documentation showing how to set up standalone
Axis with GSI?

As of GT 4.1+, the GT authorization framework is independent of GT so
in theory it should be possible to set up GridShib for GT apart from
GT (a contradiction in terms, I know :) but I've never done this.

FYI, support for GT 4.1+ will be included in GridShib for GT v0.6.1,
due out later this month or early next, hopefully before the release
of GT 4.2 (whenever that is).
